Description
The Thing That Should Not Fit
The parcel ticked softly through the day. It sat, unassuming, upon the kitchen table its waxed cloth still flecked with Moor soil, its twine slightly loosened by Mum’s cautious fingers. It might have been mistaken for a box of old letters, or a forgotten bit of bakery were it not for the sound. Not mechanical, not altogether organic, the tick was the kind of sound that made one pause mid-step, mid-sentence, as though the house itself were counting something down.
