She was too small to name them too small for names at all but she pressed her tiny nose to the cool air and felt something vast and close at the same time. The stars made arches between themselves, as if the sky were a great cathedral, and she was being welcomed in. This is where Zelda’s story begins: with wonder, and the feeling that even the smallest creature is held inside something enormous.

She was a pup with curious ears and a nose that never stopped asking questions.

She rolled in the wet grass.

She chased things she never quite caught.

She sat very still, sometimes, for no reason anyone around her could see. As she grew through the seasons, through the joys and the harder days she gathered something. Not in the way you gather objects, or even knowledge. More the way a river gathers its character from every bank it has ever touched. By the time Zelda reached her elder years, she was not wise in the way that fills a room with words.

She was wise in the way of old trees quietly, rootedly, without needing to announce it. This booklet holds her story, from the very first morning to the very last long look back. Twenty-six chapters. Twenty-six letters. Twenty-six moments in one life, lived with attention and with heart. Zelda’s story is also, in some small way, yours.
